NINETEEN

Star System 1

VAL

I stepped lightly, conscious of every breath that escaped my lips. One wrong move and I could ruin everything. The guard quarters were better maintained and better lit compared to the dark, unsettling corridors of the prisoners' cells, but I would have preferred those to this. I couldn’t move around in the shadows unnoticed here. If someone came around the corner I would be spotted instantly. The hallways were empty so far, but someone was certain to appear at any moment.

I’d come up with this idea, but now that I was in the middle of it, all the flaws became apparent. It didn’t take long for the echo of footsteps to fill the silence. I managed to get around a corner just before a large Alderian guard made his way down the hall. Remaining unseen, I held my breath till he passed me by—none the wiser. Stalking after him, I reached for his stun baton and managed to free it from the loose belt around his waist.

As the movement registered in his peripheral vision, the guard swung around, his eyes wide in alarm as he noticed me. It was too late. By the time he reacted, I had already shoved the stun baton against his skin, sending him to the ground in a frozen heap.

“Sorry,” I muttered as I fumbled around the front of his suit, undoing the fastenings. After successfully retrieving the guard’s clothes and helmet, I dragged and stashed the knocked-out Alderian safely out of view.

Time for the next target.

In a stroke of good luck, the second and third guard went down as easy as the first. Neither of the guards had expected a prisoner to get past the security system, making their guard lax and giving me the opening I needed to secure three uniforms. Climbing back through the air duct I’d used to reach the guard quarters, I exited through the small tube and rushed back to where Te’ryn and Des’ri remained.

Their heads were turned, watching for any incomers. I dropped to the ground, and Te’ryn’s body stiffened at the sound. He turned around, relaxing at the sight of me. Before he could speak, I shoved the uniforms into his hands, pushing both him and Des’ri into a corner out of sight. We quickly pulled the uniforms up over our jumpsuits. I paused, noticing both Te’ryn’s and Des'ri’s stares.

“There’s no way this is going to work,” Des'ri said.

“Yeah, no, you’re way too small for this to be believable, Val.” Te’ryn rubbed his jaw as he stared at me quizzically.

I released the material, the suit landing in a jumble around my ankles. “Sorry, I didn’t have a better plan, okay? I’d rather try and get out than have to wake up to another assassin trying to kill me though.”

Te’ryn’s brows knit together. A moment passed, then he spoke. “Val, hide in my suit. Just hang around my neck and I’ll do all the walking.”

My jaw dropped. “And you think my idea is bad?!”

Te’ryn shrugged and Des'ri actually looked as if he was considering the idea.
